Aliana’s arrival was unexpected. How, do you say? We were pregnant for months, how did we not expect her arrival?
Well, you see, she was three weeks early. We had planned a home birth with a Certified Nurse Midwife (the amazing Michelle Doyle, of Local Care Midwifery ), we had the birthing pool in our posession, but we did not have the most crucial piece: the birthing kit.
It was a scramble, a mad dash, to get all the things we needed when I went into labor at 36 weeks and 4 days. Little did we know, this would end up being the least of our worries, it became our funny birthing story. In the end, Ali was born safely at home, in the pool, in the dining area of our kitchen. I had a natural, unmedicated birth for my first child. Why…. because I am crazy, that’s why. In reality, there is a host of other reasons, most of which I discussed at the start of this blog. But that’s not why you’re here. If that’s something you’d like to read about, start here. Although everything seemed fine at first, she had a rough start, and ended up in the hospital’s NICU. As much as we tried, we just could not avoid having a hospital involved in our birth. In the end, admitting her was the best choice we made as new parents.
